A Cycle in Nine Parts

Tiny Poems

I.

What was once beautiful is now grotesque. What I mistook for rare is the same as everywhere else. Your words— when I dare repeat them— turn to ash in my mouth. Your actions, and absence, have told me everything you lacked the courage to say.

II.

Everything you offered turned to dust, scattered by the same wind that carried your promises away. Words are easy. Integrity is not.

III.

So run. Hide. Return to the shadows you prefer to keep, where light can't reach you and nothing is asked of you— where responsibility is void and indecency goes unremarked

IV.

I am moving forward into the light. Do not follow. I will not look back.

V.

The safety, the warmth of your arms, was only an illusion. A velvet-lined snare. A danger disguised as shelter— a danger that smiled.

VI.

The warmth I trusted, now cold and slick, seeping into bone, settling in too quick— a quiet chill no fire could fix, no flame could undo.

VII.

Ice encases my heart now— not as punishment, but preservation. Until true warmth is proven, not promised.

VIII.

Even enemies can have respect for one another. I was not granted such dignity — not because I lacked worth, but because you lacked the capacity to recognize it.

IX.

To do to another what you fear being done to yourself— to reduce a person to convenience is an act of choice. So hear my voice: this will not be excused.

"I'm placing down my pen.
We have reached the end.
You are now excused."

Reluctantly,
Gene

When the page ends, the ritual doesn't have to.

The Still Cup was created for quiet reflection. Steeped & Sealed carries those same moments beyond the screen — through books, tea, correspondence, and literary rituals designed for readers who believe stories deserve to be lived as much as they are read.

Because sometimes the next chapter begins after you close the book.

About

The Still Cup

The Still Cup is a quiet corner of Gene Writes dedicated to reflection, healing, creativity, and the moments that shape us. Here you'll find poetry, essays, observations, and reminders that growth is rarely loud — and often begins in stillness.

Part of the Gene Writes ecosystem, The Still Cup welcomes readers who appreciate stillness, work curated with intention, and the kinds of conversations that stay with you long after the page is turned. Because when the reading is finished and the coffee cools, the conversation continues — sometimes through The Uninvited Crow's investigations, sometimes around The Still Table, and sometimes at Steeped & Sealed.

Reluctantly,
Gene
